About

Auliak Matias Martinez

The Gaze Behind AULIAK

Not everyone wishes to be seen.
Sometimes, what is truly unsettling is seeing too much.
We are taught to look into people’s eyes.
I learned to distrust them.
The face tells us who we think someone is.
Gesture reveals what even the body does not know it is confessing.
I am not interested in identity.
I am interested in the moment identity slips.
Every image begins long before the shutter is released.
I never search for photographs.
They arrive.
Quietly.
Unexpectedly.
My only task is to remain long enough for the invisible to decide it wishes to appear.
Perhaps every work I create begins with the same question:
What refuses to be seen?

AULIAK is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose work explores what emerges when identity gives way to gesture.
Working across photography, moving image and installation, AULIAK creates carefully constructed works in which physical presence, spatial relationships and visual rhythm become the primary language.

Created exclusively in black and white, each photograph is conceived as an autonomous visual situation, distilled to its essential elements. Rather than documenting reality, the images construct encounters where the familiar becomes uncertain and the unseen quietly surfaces

Based in Barcelona, AULIAK works within an international contemporary art context.

The studio is supported by Mónica Bellés de Villa, Studio and Editions Director, who oversees production, editions, and collector relations.
