THE GAZE BEHIND AULIAK
Not everyone wishes to be seen. Sometimes, what is truly unsettling is seeing too much.
Where does truth hide when the face can no longer be trusted?
We are taught to look into people’s eyes. I learned to distrust them.
The face tells us who we believe someone is. Their gestures reveal what they do not even know they are revealing.
I am not interested in how people present themselves. I am interested in what escapes the moment they stop controlling how they wish to be seen.
I never know where these images come from. I never chase them. They simply appear, and I feel compelled to follow them wherever they choose to lead me.
I only try to remain long enough for the unnoticed to choose to reveal itself.
Perhaps all of my work begins with the same impulse: to discover what does not wish to be seen.
